Another from the window. I’ve come to realise that the light is a bit awkward at this location as the bords will usually have their back to me but I manage to catch this Tree Sparrow just as he turned and the light caught his head.

3 Cute Chicks
We have a Swallow nest in our shed and I took this quick snap with the NEX (articulated LCD with liveview came in handy!). They’re getting bigger even just in the last 2 weeks and can barely hide in the nest any more. I suspect … Read More →
Exotic Birds?
Is this an unusual visitor to our shores? Nope, it’s a Starling with a pollen-coloured head!
How many birds do you see?
A composite of several images. This was just a trial run but I haven’t been able reshoot it is nicer weather and with a better composition
The Christmas Robin
Well, that’s what I’m calling this one because I doubt I’ll get any proper frost+snow+robin combinations before next weekend.
Three for a Girl?
One for sorrow, two for joy / Three for girls and four for boys… Baby #2 is due in September and perhaps this is a clue :)
Singing Robin
A robin singing. I was just playing around with this (cropped) version by desaturating the background — nothing special really. Can’t wait to be back in Kerry this weekend for some great photo opportunities.

The Fl*cking Birds are coming!
Starlings flocking just outside Youghal. I’d noticed them from the road and thought, ”if there’s a left turn up here I can get alongside that field”. Hey presto, there was a small road and I pulled off to watch them. It was quite a large flock (probably the largest I’ve seen up close) but I know some places have larger ones. Starlings are thought of as common bird but it’s still rare enough to see them in these numbers. The effects of agriculture have had some severe effects on their populations, reducing them 80% over 50 years in some places.
When photographing them I was trying to figure out how I’d convey the size, movement, chaos, and noise. Ultimately, I went for a fairly straight shot but decided to shoot a short video to show how easily these birds hide in the short crop. There are some things a still photo just can’t capture.
